The Knit Before Christmas!

Over the last few years the popularity of the old Christmas Jumper has been making a comeback and in 2014, we are seeing the trend develop in some interesting ways…

No longer is the Christmas jumper merely a way to express a little excess festive spirit, oh no, today the Christmas jumper has been elevated to a position of importance during the festive period and there’s no day so important in the life cycle of a Christmas jumper as today. Today is none other than Christmas jumper day and thanks to the folks over at Save The Children, what was once merely a fashion statement is now a fun way of raising money for a truly worthy cause.

By simply wearing a woolly to spread the word and donating just £2 to Save The Children, you can make a huge difference. This campaign has already raised a huge £198,857 so don’t forget to get your jumper on and donate! And it is not just Save The Children who are capitalizing on the woolly jumper as a way to make a difference, we already brought you news of the campaign aimed at knitting woolly jumpers for battery hens but how about putting pups in knits too?

Pups in Pullovers and Bovine Models

Wood Green’s The Animals Charity is now urging animal-lovers, pet owners and Christmas jumper enthusiasts to showcase their pets in pullovers to help raise awareness of keeping animals warm this Christmas too.  All you need to do is take a picture of you and your furry friend in your festive best and donate just £5 to the cause to help raise awareness and buy much needed coats, bedding and jumpers needed to keep thousands of homeless pets warm this winter. You can check out some of the photos that have already been taken just here…

And finally, if chickens, dogs and other pets in jumpers wasn’t enough there is a third and final charity campaign capitalizing on the Christmas jumper which caught our eye this week: Send A Cow’s 2014 Christmas campaign. This campaign features the knitting of a Christmas jumper for Gloria, “a bovine model”, yes you did read that correctly, a bovine model. Though it seems knitting a jumper for a cow is definitely not an undertaking for the uninitiated, take a look at the video here on the epic amount of effort involved…

And on that note, we will leave you in what we hope is both a festive and charitable spirit so don’t forget to donate to any of these excellent causes if you can and of course, get your festive knit on!

Have you ever used knitting as a way of raising money for a charitable cause, let us know in the comments below…
